Lira

Normalcy returned to the town here, a day after five people were killed when an anti-Kony demonstration turned violent.

Business owners threw open the doors to their premises following heavy deployment of the army and other security personnel.

Shops, banks, hotels, schools and other offices were open for the whole of yesterday while public transport vehicles resumed their trips out of Lira.

The town had come to a standstill on Wednesday during the demonstration, organised to protest the Kony rebellion and the massacre of between 84 and 240 people in Barlonyo camp on Saturday.

After the riots on Wednesday, businesses and offices remained closed in the whole town.

Even bars that normally operate at night were closed as the army kept a close watch.

District security officials were locked up in a meeting for the best part of yesterday to discuss the Wednesday riot, among other issues.

The District Police Commander, Mr Godfrey Aropet, chaired the meeting but was unavailable for comment.
